Some people are very comfortable when it comes to visiting the dentist. Others are excited about their upcoming appointment. Many people however, suffer from dental anxiety, or even a phobia when it comes to the dentist.
There can be several reasons that people feel anxious, or even fearful about a procedure. Some people are uncomfortable with the idea of another person’s hands in their mouths. Others may not like someone getting so close to them. A person may not like the loss of control they feel while sitting in the dental chair, while another person may be apprehensive about the possible discomfort, or even embarrassed about the condition of their teeth or mouth. But skipping dental appointments for any reason can lead to cavities, gum disease, lost teeth and other problems.
If you are anxious about seeing the dentist, by all means, let us know! We’ll be happy to work with you in overcoming that anxiety. Sometimes, just knowing in advance what will happen during your procedure can help you relax. We can also arrange for you to give us a signal if you need to take a break at some point during the procedure.
Another option is sedation. Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas has been used at many practices for a long time, and for some dentists, it is the preferred method of sedation for children. Nitrous oxide is mixed with oxygen and administered to the patient through a mask placed over the nose. Under the effects of nitrous oxide, you will feel relaxed, but you will not be unconscious. You will still be able to communicate with the dentist and the staff if you need to do so. In addition, the effects of nitrous oxide wear off quickly after the gas has been removed, and there are no lingering after-effects.
