Developing proper dental hygiene habits is an important part of preserving the health of your smile. We encourage you to brush your teeth at least twice every day and floss daily to keep you smile in good condition. Many patients are unsure what type of floss they should choose, and we want to clarify that the best type of floss is the one you will use daily and enjoy using. Each type of dental floss has its perks, and Carey Dentistry is happy to help you choose one that meets your preferences.

One option is waxed dental floss, which, as the name suggests, is is covered in wax to make flossing between your teeth easier. Waxed floss is also beneficial to closely spaced teeth because it slides easily between them. Waxed floss is resistant to tearing and may be the best solution if your floss tends to break down between your teeth. It is also often a flavored floss, motivating you to floss more often if you find a flavor you enjoy. Beginners working on forming oral hygiene habits often find waxed floss to be a good choice.

If you need a thinner floss, you can try unwaxed floss because it isn’t coated. Unwaxed floss is also not flavored and is more likely to break than waxed floss, but some patients prefer it because it’s easier to maneuver and avoids chemicals such as Teflon. If you do not like flavored floss or are pregnant and find that it triggers nausea, you may wish to choose an unwaxed floss. Unwaxed floss will also let you know when all the plaque has been removed by squeaking against the clean teeth.
